The venue will once again be the Stade Louis II in Monaco for the UEFA curtain raiser, seeing the UEFA Champions League champions face the UEFA Cup champions. Often clubs field weaker sides in this cup and concentrate on the league, however this time, Sir Alex Ferguson says he will play a strong team. His side lost to Lazio 9 years ago in the same competition, and saw how much it meant to Lazio.

Wednesday marked the second-legs of the 3rd Round Qualifying for the UEFA Champions League with the winners of each tie going through to the group stage of the competition and pocketing a substantial amount of prize and TV revenue in the process. There were two British sides taking part on Wednesday with Arsenal leading FC Twente 2-0 from the first leg and Liverpool having their tie finely balanced at 0-0 against Standard Liege.

On Saturday, Pascal Chimbonda was left out of the Sunderland side for their trip to White Hart Lane, after turning up late to a pre-match walk around the teams hotel. This is not the first time that Sunderland manager Roy Keane has been quick to discipline his players for being late, and it is unlikely that it’ll be the last.

Saturday marked the last day of the Men’s Olympic football tournament the 2008 Beijing Games. The decision to stage the final match of the tournament at the Birds Nest Stadium allowed 89,000 fans to watch the game but it was scheduled to be staged at 12.00pm, in the searing Chinese heat. Play had to be stopped twice to enable the players and officials to take water on board as the temperature reached a whopping 42 degrees Celsius (107F). The match was a repeat of the 1996 Olympic Gold Medal match and the Nigerians were hoping that they could emulate that side by beating the Argentinians.

Sunderland have announced that they have signed David Healy on a three-year transfer from Fulham and Djibril Cissé on a year-long loan from Olympique Marseille thus bolstering their strike force for the season. The fee for David Healy is undisclosed, however it is believed to be around £1.2million.

On Wednesday evening, the first international fixture of the season took place for the home nations with England facing the 8th ranked Czech Republic, Scotland facing Northern Ireland and Wales against Georgia. Tonight’s fixtures were the only opportunity for the respective managers to try out new things ahead of the World Cup Qualifying campaign.
